With fuel prices almost hitting US $150 a barrel, who wouldn’t want to save gas money?
These days, oil price is hurting us badly. It is not unusual to see prices at gas stations adjusted upwards for more than 10 times since the beginning of this year. In Malaysia, the Prime Minister’s political position is compromised when the petrol prices shoot up by 40 percent overnight
So, how exactly can we save money on fuel, gas or petrol?
Having driven cars for almost 30 years, I found the following to help save gas money.
1) Travel light
The heavier the car, the more gas it consumes. Things that are not used on a daily basis should be not left in the car. For example, I have seen many golf enthusiast their their golf clubs in the car but they only use it weekly or fortnightly.
2) Air conditioning
This consumes high power. When waiting for someone, switch off the air conditioner. This gives substantial savings.
3) Plan you route
Plan your route to get the shortest distance. In cities, however, avoid streets with heavy congestion as the car also consumes fuel in idle time or while waiting at traffic lights.
4) Schedule
If possible, choose to travel in non peak hours to avoid traffic congestion. A smooth flow help to optimize fuel consumption
5) Drive at optimal speed
Travel at consistent speed. When accelerating, do not exceed 250rpm. While the acceleration rate is slower, any value higher than this will actually consume unnecessary fuel
6) Use 95 octane
Buy 95 octane fuel instead of 98 octane fuel. Practically, the mileage you get is about the same but 98 octane cost much higher. So, you optimize your savings by switching to 95 octane fuel.

On July 3, 2008 the price of a barrel of oil hit an all time high at $145 a barrel. Will you remember this day in 10 years time? Probably not, because chances are that by then the price of oil will have hit many new highs.
The expensive cost of fuel is affecting everyone worldwide. In numerous cities around the world people are turning to public transport, cycling, walking, and any other cheaper means of getting around in order to cut down on their fuel bills. The relaxing Sunday drives that many people used to take are soon to be consigned to history.
For many of us though, being totally without a car is not an option - we need it to get to work, to visit our friends and family, to drop our kids off at school. What can we do to save money on gas?
Believe it or not, there are many simple tricks that we can all use to reduce our fuel costs - things that you may not have even thought about. Some of the more important ones include:
* Slowing down - driving just 10mph over the limit on the freeway dramatically makes your driving more expensive. Stick to the speed limit, it’s not just safer, it’s cheaper too. 56mph is the optimum speed for fuel consumption in most cars.
* Keep your tires inflated at the correct pressure - answer this honestly, when was the last time you checked your tire pressure? Under-inflated tires strain your engine, requiring it to work hard and burn more gas.
* Avoid sudden acceleration - we all like the sound our engine makes when we “open it up” and take off from the traffic lights. Understand that, when your engine sounds so good, it is burning your $$ at a very quick rate.
* Turning off the air-con - it’s responsible for using up approximately 5% or more of the fuel in your tank.
* Driving smarter - if you see a red light in the distance, take your foot off the gas now. If you’re stuck in a traffic jam try to keep your car rolling rather than stopping and starting - much the same as a heavy truck does.
These are just a few simple tips that can make a big difference to your fuel consumption and save you significant money on gas. Needless to say there are many more tips and tricks out there, and combining them all together has the potential to make a big difference to your wallet. Some of the latest publications even suggest that you can double your mileage - in these times of high fuel prices, books like this will become an essential part of everyday living.

WITH GAS PRICES NOW AT $4 A GALLON IN THE US, I FELT THAT GETTING AN ARTICLE UP HERE ON FRUGAL SPENDING JUST MIGHT BE HELPFUL TO AT LEAST SOMEBODY!
————
Being single and living a frugal lifestyle isn’t that difficult as you are the only one involved in all the decision-making. However this all changes once you have a partner or if children come along, expanding your family and income requirements. To ensure a more harmonious life and to avoid future rows about money or even worse getting into financial difficulty it is important that every member of the family understands the need to live a frugal lifestyle..
Sorting out the family budget needs to be tackled first by the adults in the family, as they will have to have a united front if the rest of the family are going to be persuaded to follow the new frugal living regime. The first things to discover and sort out are:

Whether either of the adults have any outstanding debts or savings. These should both be consolidated.
If either of them have credit cards and if so which ones, it is important that the amount of credit cards are kept to a minimum and that the ones that are used are providing the lowest interest rates and best terms.
How much each of them spends a week and how they record their spending. A budget needs to be set for personal spending and a single way of recording the family’s finances should be put into place.
Once the adults are sure of the finances it is important for the whole family to sit down together to discuss the families future goals and why living a frugal lifestyle will help them to achieve these goals. Some common goals are:

Saving for holidays
Retirement
Buying a new home
Children’s futures
Reducing any existing debt.
These goals should be clearly written out and placed in a prominent place in the home as a permanent reminder to everyone.
The last main hurdle in making sure the whole family keeps to a frugal living budget is to make sure they all understand the value of money and sticking to a budget. To do this I believe it is important to treat all children in an honest and adult fashion and instilling in them a sense of responsibility and commitment to the family as a whole.
Young children will need to be given a broad understanding of the concept of money; this can be done in a few simple steps:
Involve the children in buying decisions for large household items, explaining why the items are so expensive and how valuable they are.
Get them to help with making the weekly shopping list and get them to compare one brand with another and the difference in cost

Explain how you make money and how many hours you have to work to earn certain amount.Give your children a small amount of weekly pocket money in exchange for a small job around the house
Provide the children with a piggy bank and encourage them to save money for items they want to but.
Show them alternative places to shop like charity stores and Garage sales.
Teenagers will need a slightly different approach as their demands for money for things such as buying music; makeup and clothes can put quite a strain on the family budget if not checked early on. It is important to make them realise that they can have these things but in moderation.
Allocate an amount of money that you are prepared and able to spend on your teenagers each week for things like clothes, make up and Cd’s etc and then give the teenager that amount of money in one go every week, making sure they understand that it is up to them to budget this money themselves.
Once the whole family understands that by living a frugal lifestyle they will be helping to achieve family goals and they will all benefit at some point, it will be much easier to keep a reign on the budget and to have a much happier family life.
